Resource Hacker - Editors Review:
Version reviewed: 3.4.0
This is probably the only free workable resource hacker available. How well it works depends a lot on the coding language used by the target prog. C+ programming seems to be the most hackable. Visual Basic apps are largely unhackable. Note that even hackable apps might not recompile correctly, and that the resulting might not work. Since this application supports Win95, WinMe, let me also note that this resource hacker is not compatible with 16-bit programs, which a shame is seeing as there are still a few 16-bit components present in Win95, and even Win2000. Finally, an app that's been treated with an EXE compressor cannot be decompiled fully by this app. Sometimes trying to uncompress with UPX beforehand works, sometimes not (not all EXE compression is done using UPX). Recommended, but just be mindful of its limitations... and the potential pitfalls of using an app that's been recompiled with new/modified resources. This tool may be use in some windows tricks which we write on our website, for example Changing Windows XP Start button title. This tool is definitely must have and I warmly recommend you to click on download button.

Resource Hacker is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on Win95, Win98, WinME, WinNT, Win2000 and WinXP operating systems.rnViewing Resources: Cursor, Icon, Bitmap, GIF, AVI, and JPG resource images can be viewed. WAV and MIDI audio resources can be played. Menus, Dialogs, MessageTables, StringTables, Accelerators, Delphi Forms, and VersionInfo resources can be viewed as decompiled resource scripts. Menus and Dialogs can also be viewed as they would appear in a running application.rnSaving Resources: Resources can be saved as image files (*.ico, *.bmp etc), as script files (*.rc), as binary resource files (*.res), or as untyped binary files (*.
bin).rnModifying Resources: Resources can be modified by replacing the resource with a resource located in another file (*.ico, *.bmp, *.res etc) or by using the internal resource script compiler (for menus, dialogs etc). Dialog controls can also be visually moved and/or resized by clicking and dragging the respective dialog controls prior to recompiling with the internal compiler.rnAdding Resources: Resources can be added to an application by copying them from external resource files (*.res).rnDeleting Resources: Most compilers add resources into applications which are never used by the application. Removing unused resources can reduce an application's size.
